Snowdonia

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Driving off the motorway onto the little road towards Snowdonia reveals a breathtaking view of the journey ahead. The mountain peaks loom in the distance clouded in mist revealing sections of snow and scree covered slopes. I get excited just seeing them. I drive straight past my destination, the Dru Yoga Centre, so transfixed am I on the surrounding beauty, and find myself winding around up towards Lake Ogwen, peaks either side. I love this country – it is pristine, wild and extreme. It is dusk so the climb will have to wait until tomorrow.

At the first chance I don my boots and raincoat, grab my walking poles and head up to the Lake, take a right and find myself walking up the steps around the upper lake. The clouds are clearing … patches of blue sky appear and the crescent moon beams out a smile to me. The still waters reflect the amphitheatre created by the mountains. Snow built up around the shore enhances my sense of wonder. My heart sings spontaneously and I have a smile from ear to ear.

Climbing higher up the stone steps the extended view of the valley and other lakes appears. Over the stile and higher still to a large rock overlooking this majestic place. Stretching I do the yoga posture called the Tree and the Salutation to the Four Directions honouring the qualities of acceptance, courage and strength, generosity, gratitude and trust. I lie down on my back with my head resting on soft green moss and relax deeply while looking up at the moon, soaking up the stillness and privilege of being here.
