Dad’s Fallen Off the Perch

My dad, David, died peacefully at home here in Emerald Beach on Easter Sunday. As his 90-year-old body finally caught up with him, he was ready, in his words, to “drop off the perch.”

There were so many people who helped him stay safe, connected, and able to enjoy this final chapter of his life in a place he truly loved. Family, friends, doctors, nurses, neighbours, the Emerald Beach community, musicians, NVC carers, dementia support services, and even friends from afar who were there for me when it was hard. It truly felt like a collective effort. We all did it.

Dad was a larger-than-life character who made friends wherever he went. He would spend hours sitting under the pandanus tree at the beach, watching the waves, patting passing dogs, and striking up conversations with anyone nearby.

Some words shared on the local community page capture this beautifully:

“His connection with the Emerald Beach community was wonderful to watch… he had a way of drawing people into conversation and leaving them with his humour and outlook on life.”

“David was such a lovable character, always up for a chat at the beach. He will be missed.”

“I feel privileged to have shared his joy of the beach and sunshine… precious memories.”

It was an honour to care for him, especially in these final years. Thank you to everyone who played a part. Your care and presence meant so much to me, and helped keep him safe and content at home.

Dad’s “Falling Off the Perch” ceremony, which we wrote together before he died, was held at the chapel on Hogbin Drive on Tuesday 14 April 2026. I’ll share more of that story soon.
