Farewell Mitch Weeden

Some funerals are definitely harder than others to prepare for. Mitch’s death was sudden and unexpected. He was a young father of two beautiful little boys, and he died in an accident. The shock, disbelief, and the tragedy rippled not only through his beloved family but throughout the entire community. He was loved and revered by so many.

When I was preparing his ceremony, I kept returning to the extraordinary number of roles Mitch held in the lives of others. This is how I opened his farewell:

“Mitch was a loving husband, a devoted father, a caring son, son in law, brother-in-law, a treasured grandson, nephew and cousin. He was a mate, coach, goalkeeper, volunteer, club president, vice president, mentor, organiser and community builder. Across football fields, cricket grounds, RSL events, family gatherings and everyday life, Mitch became someone people could rely upon. No words can explain why a life ends so unexpectedly. What we can do is recognise the impact of Mitch’s life, and ensure that his stories, values and memories continue.”

Mitch’s wife, Liana, chose the following words for the close of the ceremony.

The following quote has been chosen by Liana and written by an anonymous author.

“Trophies may gather dust but the memories forged in the crucible of competition endure. The victories, defeats and shared moments become the tapestry of a life well lived.

As you look down from heaven onto all of the fields you ever set foot upon. I hope you smile at the lives you have touched and the legacy you have left. May God place his hand on your shoulder and say, Well done.”

Well done Mitch Weeden.
