Farewell Mary Johnston

“As the matriarch, Mary’s presence was a constant source of support and guidance. She was the person family members turned to in times of need, offering wisdom, comfort, and a listening ear. Her reliability and acceptance created a foundation of love and security for her family who hold her in great respect. “

“Mary’s body was tired and, in many ways, she was ready to leave. In her final moments, surrounded by loved ones, Mary found peace. Linda, her sister had just arrived and the family were chatting. Mary died with her family by her side. There is a quote by the painter, Gustav Klimt, that says, “I hope death is like being carried to your bedroom when you were a child and fell asleep on the couch during a family party. I hope you can hear laughter from the next room.” Mary’s departure, though sudden, was gentle, and the family are left with both a profound sense of loss and also comfort that they know she would have enjoyed hearing them all in the background as if she were at home.

Barney, may you feel the enduring love of your wife, Mary and the unwavering support of your family as you grieve the loss of your cherished companion and lifelong friend.”

Words of Remembrance

Mary will be remembered for her love of family. She was devoted to her husband, Barney and to their children, Sandra and her partner, Richard, Maxine and her husband, Chris; Russell and his wife, Lynda.  Mary cherished her grandchildren and their partners, Alyssa and Dane; Riley and Kana, Morgan, Harry and Sara, Marcus and Angam, and Lucas. She also cherished her great grandchildren: Townes, Sabi(ne), Augie, Sowung and Peipem. Her family meant the world to her. She was a treasured member of her community and a dear friend to many from the shopkeepers, the voluntary groups, to the neighbours.

There is a quote by the author, AA Milne, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard” It is hard. You will miss her beautiful smile, her laugh, your political discussions, waving goodbye as you drive away, her abundant baking, sharing a cup of Milo, seeing her playing with the great-grandchildren; and, of course, her warm and kind presence in your lives.

Mary’s legacy is one of unwavering love, resilience, and dedication. She touched countless lives with her generosity, strength, and boundless spirit. As you bid farewell, may you carry forward the love she shared and the lessons she gave just by being her beautiful self, ensuring that her memory continues to inspire and guide you in the coming months and years.

As you would often hear her call out, ‘Hooroo.’

May she rest in peace.”
