In Memory of Owen Larsen

Owen was a man of stories and contradictions—a fiercely proud father, grandfather and great grandfather, a passionate enthusiast of horseracing, a skilled builder, and an unapologetically particular man with a sharp wit.

Words of Remembrance

“Owen was deeply proud of his family, even if he didn’t always show it in conventional ways. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren fiercely, often marvelling, “Look at what we created.” He took pride in their accomplishments, keeping track of their school reports and photos, and never missing the chance to talk about them.

Though gruff at times, Owen’s care and devotion shone through in quiet ways. He worshipped the ground his beloved Julie walked on. From the moment he met her, he knew she was the one, and together they built a life of love, resilience, and family. After Julie’s passing, Owen’s heart was never quite the same.

He was a man of routine and precision, from the way he arranged his shirts in the wardrobe—blue never next to red—to how the cereal had its rightful place in the cupboard. Cooking became one of his later passions, and he took pride in his roasts on the Weber and his unbeatable fish and chips. Yet, it was never just about the food—it was about the company, the family, and the memories shared around the table.

Owen was a survivor, facing life’s challenges with determination and grit. Time and again, he defied the odds, overcoming health scares and continuing to live with a sharp mind and a steadfast will. His life was shaped by his passions—whether crafting something with his hands, being a Grand Master at the Masons, or following his beloved All Blacks.

There’ll be space in your lives now as the time you put into caring for him or connecting via Sunday night Facetime calls is opened up. The passing of both Julie and Owen marks the end of an era—a profound moment that closes a long chapter filled with their stories, guidance, and love. It is a time of reflection and gratitude for the foundation they built, the values they passed on, and the memories they leave behind. As you navigate this transition, their legacy continues to live on through the lives they touched and the family they cherished.”
