Canberra in summer is a delight. Meandering through the leafy streets in the old suburb of O’Connor always makes my heart sing. Vegetable gardens in front lawns, unmowed nature strips, neatly manicured fern landscaping, old homes next to mansions. I was down for the weekend to celebrate a dear friend, Kathleen’s 70th birthday. We met in 1981 when we were both pregnant with our first child. I was a key member in the Canberra Homebirth Group and would welcome people to the area.
We became firm friends and we were at each others second child’s home births. We then had a few years break before having a third child each. We did playdays, gardening, harvesting, and holidays together. I love her down home heartfulness, quality meaningful conversations and our shared ease with each other.
Her daughter, Rosie and I spent the morning of the party making this impressive table platter. It was fun, involved and engaging. A perfect ritual for creating beauty, sustenance and a time to connect and have fun. It took us way longer than expected and there was more than enough food for 60 people! Highly recommend this for a party or celebration. In fact, I came home and made a platter on the table with my grandchildren when they next came over.
For Kathleen’s party they had speeches and music and a slide show that ran throughout the evening. It was a wonderful gathering.

Thanks so much for sharing this amazing event with us. I’ve never seen a more artistically beautiful spread before. I can only imagine how delicious it was.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATHLEEN
